Revive the TV Series "The Colony"
How many of my survival prepping friends (YOU) wish that the Discovery Channel would bring back the show The Colony? I was recently rewatching this manufactured survival reality show and found myself both frustrated by the contestants and interested to see more of their creative solutions.
The Colony only survived two seasons on tv back in 2010. The show brought together approximately 10 people from many different, helpful professionals: a doctor, a nurse, a machinist, a chemical engineer, a mechanical engineer, an aerospace engineer, a handyman, a fitness instructor, a marine biologist, and more. Between all the kinds of professional skills, you would think they would have everything figured out, but that’s where the show is frustrating to watch.
Personalities definitely rear their ugly head in this reality show. The core team who stay at an urban industrial complex place, called the Sanctuary, are also attacked by outside staged individuals trying to represent someone stealing supplies or who might be there to hurt someone in a survival situation. Security and the need for a night watch quickly becomes an apparent essential to the core team staying in the Sanctuary shelter.
Many arguments between the participants are due to them trying to decide which direction their projects and time and energy should go into. Oftentimes the projects in conflict are engineering or energy projects conflicting with creature comforts like a shower or the ability to wash your clothes. One of the participants insisted that she spend her time and building supplies on a gym which positively impacted her mental health, but really took away from some of the more essential projects that you would need in a survival scenario to even stay alive.
In any real emergency, there would be some conflict and some confusion in deciding which way your family or team should do to survive. That’s why pre-planning in times of peace is so important so that you have a solid plan when SHTF. You should always have an evacuation plan and a bug-out bag prepped.
